The Cave of Thawr lies near the summit of Mount Thawr, south of Mecca. According to Islamic sources, the Prophet Muhammad and Abu Bakr hid here for three days during the Hijra in 622 CE from the Meccans who were searching for them.
At-Tawbah 9:40 alludes to the event: "…the second of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, 'Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.'" The verse does not name the cave; commentators and biographers of the Prophet generally agree that it is the Cave of Thawr.
