Nineveh, the ancient Assyrian capital, lies on the eastern bank of the Tigris, opposite today's Mosul. It is not named in the Quran, but Yunus 10:98 speaks of "the people of Jonah" as the one community that believed and was spared punishment, and as-Saffat 37:147 says Jonah was sent "to a hundred thousand or more". Hadith and commentary sources state that these were the people of Nineveh.
The Mosque of the Prophet Yunus in Mosul, home to a shrine attributed to Jonah, was visited for centuries; it was destroyed by ISIS in 2014. The ruins of Nineveh lie within the city limits of Mosul, Iraq.
